Simon S4 said: thanks - i would have thought these engines last a while (i.e. 150k / 200k +) but heard some horror stories It's more the other parts like clutch flywheel, alternator, starter motor and possibly timing chains and tensioners (mainly) that are considered weak. the AVS is not the best service plan for the V8The engine ancilliaries were also repackaged making the engine much shorter and also lighter than the 4.2 V8 previously fitted to the A8 and A6 ranges, however it was a development of this engine. The alterations allowed it to fit in the engine bay of the current S4, which the older engine was too long for.

The O2 sensors of course are down on the exhaust header pipes--the front ones that is. You can just barely see them (maybe) if you look about a foot down back at the far rear of the motor on the two sides. A better view requires pulling the air box, MAF and intake tube that leads to throttle body.
